Fetal AlcOhOl SpectrUm DisOrder (FASD)
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Assessment:
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a medical condition that involves neurological changes to the brain as a result of pre-natal alcohol exposure. Individuals with this diagnosis have an array of strengths as well as life-long challenges. An FASD assessment is important because it provides insight into current behaviours and challenges, as well as improving quality of life. The diagnosis can also be used to access further government services and/or funding.
The FASD assessment is individualized and multifaceted and will focus on obtaining evidence of pre-natal alcohol exposure and evaluating the individual’s neurocognitive profile. The assessment includes the following components: a review of birth history and/or documentation for prenatal alcohol exposure, standardized test measures to evaluate cognition, motor skills, memory, academic functioning, language, executive skills, adaptive functioning, and affect regulation. A medical evaluation will also be conducted by a registered nurse. The findings of the assessment and recommendations will be reviewed and a copy of the report will be made available to individuals. If appropriate, referrals to other agencies and/or funding applications will be completed.
